Emily Bronte
Emily Bronte was born in Thornton, Yorkshire, England on July 30th 1818. She lived there with her mother Maria, her father Patrick, her brother Branwell and her two sisters Charlotte and Maria.
Emily, her sisters and her father were all creative in the writing fields with Emily publishing her only novel Wuthering Heights, which became a world renowned literary book, and her father also publishing a few books of his own. Emily was the fifth child of her father Patrick and her mother Maria. In 1821 the family moved to Hawoth where only a few months later Emily's mother died of cancer, her death came just after giving birth to their sixth child Anne.
At the age of 6 Emily, Charlotte, Maria and Elizabeth were sent away to go to school. At the school both Elizabeth and Maria fell seriously ill and had to be sent home where the died later from tuberculosis in 1825. In the 1800s 1:4 people would succumb to tuberculosis. After there sister's death Emily and Charlotte were taking out of school by their father and brought back home. During the time at home Emily read extensively and made up stories with her siblings, the remaining children were her brother Branwell, Charlotte, Anne who were said to have very strong imaginations when it came to their stories. As Emily grew up she had to find work, she became a teacher at a law school but had to leave when the death of her aunt made her return home. Emily died in 1848 from tuberculosis, 2 months after her brother died of the same disease and her sister Anne as well.
When Emily and her siblings would make up stories using their imagination it reminded me of the times where my cousin Jenaca and I use to live out in the country when we were about six or seven. we would go into the forest or to the river and make up our own stories either involving some sort of supernaturals or fantasy charcyers such as pirates, werewolves, fairys, vampires and other monsters. Or when we'd pretend that we could go into different realms and pretend to have supernatural powers and swing from the trees and build forts to keep the bad stuff out. I remember we would always get in trouble because we’d bring everything inside such as pillows, blankets, wooden spoons, tape etc outside and we’d use it for hours and get everything dirty.
I also can relate to Emily because I am the oldest of five children. i have a one year old sister names Ellie, a 5 year old sister names Izabell, a 7 year old brother names Bradley and a 9 year old brother named Nathan who are always are either driving me crazy or driving my dad crazy.

In the novel Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff is considered a menacing, horrible man who radiates negativity towards anyone who comes within a few feet from him. I believe that Heathcliff acts like this because he is a wounded man.
Nelly had commented that when Heathcliff was younger he was deceiving, quiet and kept to himself but had a slight wickedness to him. The wickedness that makes him the despicable man that he was, is from the abuse he had either inflicted on himself or that was put on him. The first thing that emotionally impacted Heathcliff was that he was an orphan. Heathcliff was found by Mr Earnshaw on the streets with no one knowing who his family was or even if he had one or even if he had a place to live. This was probably one of the main sources of Heathcliff keeping to himself when he first came to Wuthering Heights. It also didn’t help him when Mr. Earnshaw’s son Hindley took an instant hate towards Heathcliff from the very first day he we came to Wuthering Heights. Hindley was physically and mentally abusive towards Heathcliff because of his raging jealous of Heathcliff’s and his father’s relationship with one another. Hindley’s abuse towards him also had an emotional impact where he probably felt like nobody wanted him because if his parents didn’t and if the Earnshaw’s didn’t than who would? It also is said that if a child is in an unhappy situation or is neglected they can become deviant which Heathcliff eventually did because he felt like that was the only way that he could protect himself.
The case that wins the biggest battle scar in Heathcliff heart though is the one of Catherine Earnshaw. Catherine and Heathcliff growing up were considered inseparable, Catherine even said that whatever their souls were made of were of the same thing,“He's more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.”. Everything was all good between the two until the night that Catherine got attacked by the Linton’s dog and she had to stay at their house for 5 weeks. During those 5 weeks Heathcliff was banned from seeing Catherine and couldn’t go to the Linton’s property since they banned him from it for being a gypsie. When Catherine came back she invited the rich, beautiful, snobby kids Isabella and Edgar Linton of Thrushcross Grange. Heathcliff immediately had a hatred for Edgar Linton when he noticed how close Catherine and him had gotten over those 5 weeks. A few months later Catherine announced that she was to marry Edgar Linton and that is what started the small crack in Heathcliff’s heart. The real blow though was when she told Nelly that it would disgrace her to marry Heathcliff because of his low social standards, Heathcliff over hearing this got up of the bench and fled from Wuthering Heights without so much as a goodbye to the one person he loved with all of his heart. When Heathcliff returned three years later he was fairly distant towards Catherine and instead took an interest in her step sister Isabella. But as the days wore on Heathcliff and Catherine grew closer as she became ill and eventually they told each other how much the meant to one another but it was too late for them to live happily because Catherine had died giving birth to her daughter with Edgar. Catherine’s presence in Heathcliff’s life had its good times and it bad where he was happy with her at one point but it was her who really killed him the end with a broken heart. Not only did she break his heart by betraying him and marrying Edgar but also dying in front of him when they were so close to being happy again.
So yes despite many people, I believe that Heathcliff is a despicable man because he is wounded and the main reason he acts so hostile towards people is because he doesn’t want to look weak in front of them or get his heart broken again.
